Urbis was proud to support the Shopping Centre Council Australia’s (SCCA) industry lunch on Thursday 13 October.

With more than 600 people in attendance, the event featured fantastic contributions from Steven Lowy, Co-CEO of Westfield, looking at the global trends impacting the retail industry. Steven was in conversation with the AFR’s Robert Harley.

Key topics included:

  • technology,  innovation and the merging of online and physical environments for shopping;
  • the globalisation of retailing;
  • the evolution of the mall as a place that will be central to the wellbeing of communities;
  • the value of ‘experience’.

A further highlight was the announcement of The Frank Lowy fellowship, established in recognition of Mr Frank Lowy AC’s contribution to the Australian shopping centre industry. It will be awarded to a talented person working in the Australian shopping centre industry who has demonstrated distinction in their professional field and a commitment to shopping centre industry excellence.

Director Ian Shimmin, who closed the lunch with a vote of thanks, said: “At Urbis we have had the privilege of working with Westfield for 25 years, as well as many other fantastic businesses within the retail space. While on our recent International Retail Study Tour in North America we were reminded that Westfield is one of the world’s best, and take pride in the knowledge that it grew out of Australia.

“As the topics covered at the lunch clearly demonstrate, it is a truly exciting time for the industry and we look forward to growing our partnerships and continuing our engagement with the shopping centre industry.”
