Last Thursday evening Urbis celebrated the recent move to Western Sydney University Engineering and Innovation Hub with clients and colleagues. It was an opportunity to reconnect with the industry and to reaffirm the importance of Western Sydney and notably, Parramatta.

Stephen White, Director Planning, says “Parramatta has long been held as a significant place, firstly by the local first nations tribes that inhabited the region and in more recent history as an important western Sydney settlement. It is evident over the last century; Parramatta and its wider region has undergone periods of great advancement and periods of under investment”.

From my perspective we are at the beginning of a new era of prosperity in the region. Significant government investment in transport infrastructure is laying the platform to support major urban transformation to realise the long-held aspiration to become a genuine second CBD and HQ for western Sydney”.

“The recent completion of Parramatta Square and the developments that flank it are evidence of creating a new high quality urban character that respects the pasts and is creating a vibrant and engaging place for all. That’s exciting”.

Regional Director, Princess Ventura adds “Our new Parramatta office is a fantastic display of the Urbis purpose. Being located in the Western Sydney University Engineering and Innovation Hub provides us the opportunity to readily, and regularly connect brightest minds across Urbis and the University. Parramatta is also the heart and centre of “Future Sydney” – where most population and business growth will occur over the next couple of decades”.

With the university located in central Parramatta on Darug country, Urbis were delighted to hear from indigenous artist Hayley Pigram, who is part of the Boomalli co-op.

Hayley says “Western Sydney holds great importance to me personally as a Darug woman, as I can trace my ancestors’ stories in that Country for thousands of years. I feel connected and powerful on my Country and am always personally proud of all achievements from the area. Even in modern times it is my role to watch over and encourage my Country”.

Hayley’s artwork for the Urbis office tells a story of her Country in Western Sydney and seeks to tie that story to the development of Urbis into Western Sydney Country.

It shows the vital importance of the river, how our clans are vibrant and linked together across time and space and how, over it all, our Ancestors watch over us.

We were also joined by Marcus Ray, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Planning and Environment who spoke of the importance for professional services firms establishing a presence in Parramatta to support the vision for growth in Greater Parramatta and Western Sydney.

Our move into the industry partnership workspace within the Engineering Innovation Hub reinforces our commitment to helping to shape Western Sydney for a better future and support our clients achieve their objectives across the region.

“It was our pleasure to welcome Marcus who kindly shared his personal reflections in the growth of Parramatta, and insights on some work that the Department are doing to address housing needs, a significant issue for Western Sydney. This included addressing objectives for housing diversity and affordability and planning for resilient communities in response to the 2022 Flood Inquiry”.
