Ian Shimmin, Property Economics and Research Director, features in February’s Inside Retail Magazine, discussing the top trends set to affect the retail industry in 2017.

As it grows more diverse, the retail industry is finding new directions, thanks to the power of technology. ‘Nine big trends for 2017’ discusses the major trends impacting the retail industry with several leading retail experts.

Ian looks at a very hot topic: Amazon’s potential to disrupt the Australian retail market. Ian predicts the American company’s arrival will drive innovation and see Australian retailers up their tech game.

People can search, interact and purchase in so many ways, and these channels all need to be integrated.

He also considers the return of bricks-and-mortar stores, with many former pureplay retailers seeking a physical presence.

Pointing out the importance of technology in the customer experience, Ian also references the appearance of virtual reality in store – whether cosmetic retailers offering ‘try before you buy’ make up or virtual changing rooms.

As people experience retail overseas, standards and expectations are both raised. We need to be at the forefront of developments.

He also considers the rethinking of retail spaces – with shopping centres and retailers looking for new revenue streams from events, evening economies and partnership. Finally, Ian talks about how we can keep Australia at the forefront of international retail developments.

Ian leads Urbis’ International Retail Study Tour, which most recently visited North America to explore the latest in retail.
