Urbis has won the ‘Best Planning Ideas – Large Project’ category at the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) QLD Planning Awards for Excellence 2017.

Appointed by University of Queensland (UQ) a little over 18 months ago, Urbis’ Design and Planning teams delivered a visionary master plan for the UQ St Lucia campus and UQ’s associated landholdings.

The master plan positions UQ and its physical assets in line with future trends in education, the changing nature and role of students and how they want to study and learn in the future, as well as how the University will adapt and participate in the progressing digital economy.

The process was underpinned by stakeholder and community engagement, following which the multi-disciplinary team created a strategic framework for the planning and development of the campus over the next 20 years.

The Draft St Lucia Campus Master Plan is an exemplar piece of work.

The judges celebrated the project, stating, “The Draft St Lucia Campus Master Plan is an exemplar piece of work. The judges particularly thought the Guiding Framework in the Master Plan made it extremely easy to read and understand the intent and desired outcomes.

“Linkages with the academic, living and civic spaces were clear and well presented to show how this could be practically and successfully applied. Judges were impressed with the considerations and inclusions of indigenous and non-indigenous heritage and culture. Overall this project nomination displayed excellent communication of the planning intention through the Master Plan.”

The master plan is now complete and replaces the 2006 Site Development Plan.
