Urbis helped Melbourne Airport secure approval for the Southern Hemisphere’s first surf park – a landmark project by URBNSURF that will deliver incredible surfing experiences and perfect waves, every day, by Easter 2019.
URBNSURF Melbourne will feature a 2.1 hectare Wavegarden Cove surfing lagoon (the first of its kind in the world, and similar in size to the MCG) that will generate up to 1,000 perfect waves every hour and host surfers across six different surfing zones. The surf park will also feature a multi-outlet food and bar precinct, concept retail store, fully-equipped surf and hire shop, a surfing academy, high performance training and fitness classes, festivals and events and a beach club.
In 2015, we worked closely with Wave Park Group and Melbourne Airport, which owns the seven‑hectare site, to expedite the planning process. Our work – which drew on the input of economists, strategic and social planners, as well as engineers – helped address community interests and concerns, leading to a quicker-than-expected development approval.
“The Urbis team were very thorough, and made what could have been a complicated planning exercise into a smooth, well-researched, client-focused approach, whilst maintaining an appropriate level of independence.
– Lisa Gordon, Head of Property Development, Melbourne Airport
