Our heritage team was engaged to prepare an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment for a site in Pheasants Nest. During the assessment, Aboriginal objects were discovered, requiring test excavation.

The archaeological team collaborated with the client, Aboriginal community members, Urbis Planning Team and all relevant stakeholders to develop a test excavation methodology and deliver a two-week excavation program that satisfied requirements while responding to the unique site use – being a busy and public service station.

Our team of archaeologists worked in partnership with relevant Aboriginal community members to conduct the excavation program and ensure that the extent of sites was identified and recorded.

Urbis’ proactive and efficient approach has ensured minimal impact to the ongoing function of the site and project timeframes, while also identifying and protecting Aboriginal heritage. Future management of the Aboriginal heritage of the site is ongoing, resulting in the application for an Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit inclusive of Community Collection to identify and relocate all surface archaeological materials, to be reburied in the reconciliation gardens at the site.

Urbis’ proactive and efficient approach ensured minimal impact to the ongoing function of the site and project timeframes, while identifying and protecting Aboriginal heritage.
