The Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation (MAPT) Project is a city-shaping project that will further cement Melbourne as the arts and cultural capital of the State. In 2018, the Victorian State Government announced the largest single cultural infrastructure project that Australia has seen in the MAPT project. It will redefine Melbourne’s cultural offering through innovative, sustainable, bold and well-integrated design.
The master plan approval enables the delivery of the new National Gallery of Victoria Contemporary and the creation of a new 18,000sqm public realm area that will provide a seamless connection between Southbank, St Kilda Road and Southbank Boulevard.
Urbis worked closely with Development Victoria and the project team to create a set of site-specific planning controls. These controls encourage aspirational design outcomes, but provide sufficient flexibility to ensure the Arts Precinct can deliver the winning design following a public design competition. The controls also allow for the delivery of other project elements that form the State significant Arts Precinct Transformation.
