Located in Sydney Harbour, the Fort was constructed in 1856 and is nationally significant as a fine and intact defence fortification, unique in Australia. The site comprises the Martello Tower (one of only three in the southern hemisphere, and only one in Australia), the barracks and a battery with gun emplacements.
Urbis has been engaged to undertake exciting work at Fort Denison, to facilitate a new restaurant, bar and exhibition space on the island.
Our team delivered heritage consultancy services on the project through to completion, with built heritage assessments, heritage conservation including a schedule of conservation works and archaeology scopes including archaeological monitoring.
The conservation works are an exciting challenge for the heritage team, with the need to balance an extreme environment (saltwater, waves, tides, wind, rising damp) with the new uses on-site, which will change the operation and management of the building. The project is scheduled to be completed in late 2022. Urbis is excited to assist in the delivery of this project at a unique and highly significant site, that is an icon within Sydney Harbour.
