With Melbourne and Victoria’s rapidly growing population, guaranteeing the current and future availability of health services is vital. Urbis is proud to secure planning approval for the $350 million redevelopment of Epworth Hospital’s Richmond campus to deliver a state-of-the-art health facility.

In facilitating the complex redevelopment, we undertook a planning risk assessment for Epworth Healthcare, identifying key planning risks and a strategy to secure the relevant approvals. Our team co-ordinated a significant pre-lodgement consultation with the local community, key Ministers and local Members of Parliament and Yarra City Council. We also negotiated key planning issues associated with a major hospital redevelopment in an established, inner city location.

Our planners also worked closely with the Council Officers and Councillors to secure support for a nine-level redevelopment, bringing the facility to a total of 777 beds. Key planning issues included height, massing (limited setbacks), traffic and car parking.

We requested the assistance of the Minister for Planning to enable a timely commencement of this important health facility, thus securing timely approval for this major redevelopment for the state of Victoria.

The $350 million redevelopment of Epworth Hospital’s Richmond campus has been a complex process – redeveloping an existing hospital while maintaining current operations.
