In 2018, Noosa Shire Council provided an ambitious brief to deliver their largest playground to date in the heart of Cooroy. The playground was to be a unique nature-based play and event experience, be well integrated into the natural surrounds, reference the heritage lower mill site, integrate with the existing Cooroy Library, and reflect local character of the Maple St.
In response, we developed a masterplan for a play-scape designed to engage the local environment, inspire the imagination, and enliven the soul. Each of the play zones range from quiet spaces of low activity to highly active adventure play zones. Play spaces link via a series of formal and informal pathways, playful steppers and small trails. Gathering spots for BBQs and table settings with small turf areas for picnics and play are also dispersed evenly for the comfort of visitors.
“The masterplan sought to deliver a series of unique yet interconnected play experiences.
The playground is a unique nature-based, all-abilities offering that has been carefully integrated into the surrounding landscape and provides linkage between the Cooroy Library and Old Mill cultural heritage area. The completion of the park represents the realisation of an ambitious dream held by a tenacious few within the ranks of Noosa Shire Council. It is a triumph over the many budgetary, site, and policy related challenges that unpredictably presented themselves over the project lifecycle.
