The Orange Regional Museum has been awarded the Sulman Medal for Public Architecture and the NSW Premier’s Prize at the 2017 NSW Architecture Awards

Urbis, in collaboration with Crone Architects, designed the museum’s public domain. It includes a rejuvenated civic plaza which connects back to the city, a network of public spaces at ground level and a rooftop grass terrace.

The terrace provides an elevated viewing platform within the city, providing an enchanting connection to the adjacent Robertson Park and the Holy Trinity Anglican Church spire to the west. Visitors will be able to enjoy their surrounds while walking, playing and picnicking on the museum’s sloping rooftop lawn.

The judges commended its “simple, bold and confident moves” that have “created a destination for locals and visitors.”

Urbis led the landscape design for the museum’s public spaces. The exterior of the building presents as a continuous sloping form to the main street frontage, the grass roof leading up from the pedestrian ramp to a large level green space with views over the adjacent park and beyond to the city. A large amphitheatre steps down from the raised lawn to the new public square.

Winners of the NSW Architecture Awards will now progress to the National Architecture Awards to be announced in Canberra on Thursday 2 November.
