Urbis Heritage, Planning and Design teams worked closely with the City of Sydney to gain approval for the Development Application (DA) for ‘The Distance of Your Heart’. The artwork is one of the major public artworks identified in the the City’s Public Art Plan and forms part of the City’s contribution to the NSW State government’s light rail project.
The recently completed artwork incorporates the installation of over sixty handmade bronze bird sculptures within the public domain and a bird bath in Macquarie Place Park.
Designed by acclaimed British artist Tracey Emin, the installation is located at the northern end of the Sydney CBD traversing the city’s heritage precinct along Bridge Street, Macquarie Place Park, Grosvenor Street and Lang Park. The delicate sculptures perch on
light posts, doorways, awnings and under park benches. The opposite of monumental, the key intent of the installation was to communicate feelings of distance and homesickness; a public art piece that is ‘simple, straightforward and accessible to everybody’.
“Urbis assisted the City of Sydney to deliver this nostalgic artwork for the people of Sydney.
