Urbis was the lead urban design and landscape consultant for the Peninsula Link, a major road project managed by the Linking Melbourne Authority and delivered by the private sector consortium Southern Way.

Completed in 2013, the 27-kilometre link includes nine grade-separated interchanges connecting into 11 existing roads, as well as three freeway-to-freeway connections. The project included building 45 new bridges, moving 3 million cubic metres of earthworks, laying 380,000 tonnes of asphalt and planting 1.5 million trees and plants.

Urbis’ broad expertise meant we were involved on many fronts, ranging from leading the urban design and landscape architecture to advising the authority on the approvals process for service centres along the route. In addition, our valuations team advised the Valuer‑General’s office on the potential costs of land acquisition.

In an Australian first for a road project, the link is toll-free while benefiting from the private sector’s innovation in financing, design, construction, operation and maintenance.
