Director Tim Blythe said, “We’re extremely proud to have worked with the excellent teams at AMP Capital and the City of Sydney to realise the vision for this important city shaping project, which will leave a lasting positive legacy for the city.”
The judges praised various features of the project, including the way the planning balances “public and private interests to achieve high quality urban outcomes” and the “impressive” collaboration to create a shared vision. They also highlighted the use of “innovative techniques” such as the NSW land titling system as a planning tool to protect and in fact enhance solar access to public spaces.
It was an evening full of success for Urbis: Dean Hosking was named Young Planner of the Year, while Ryan MacIndoe received a commendation for Outstanding Student Project.
Another Urbis project, Penrith Late Night Economy, was awarded the Public Engagement and Community Planning Commendation. The judges were impressed by the use of a bottom-up strategy to create an impressive breadth of strategies for an appropriate night time economy.
The PIA Awards for Planning Excellence Program recognises innovation, leadership and excellence in the planning profession. State winners are automatically entered in the Institute’s Annual National Awards for Excellence, which will be held in 2017.
