The Urbis Perth planning and design team is proud of its involvement in the Shenton Park Hospital Redevelopment Improvement Scheme, which has received Western Australian Government approval from Planning Minister Donna Faragher.

The decision means that Shenton Park is the first metropolitan Improvement Scheme to be gazetted in the State.

The Scheme will facilitate the redevelopment of a 16ha strategic infill site 5km from the CBD, transforming it from a former hospital to a new urban village – accommodating residential growth and a greater diversity of housing choice within the western suburbs.

Working together with our client LandCorp, we prepared the Improvement Scheme which sets clear expectations for density and land use, while providing flexibility for market factors to respond over time. As one of the very first Schemes to be prepared, Urbis and LandCorp have also been responsible for developing a framework and approach that future Improvement Schemes can now follow.

The approval of the Improvement Scheme is a milestone for LandCorp and is an excellent example of how the WA Government's recent planning reform agenda can deliver exceptional outcomes for a local community.

Future residents will enjoy the next evolution of inner-city living – including a range of housing densities supported by transit, local amenities and services while celebrating the heritage and landscape features of the site.

Urbis Associate Directors, Tim Dawkins and Megan Gammon, as well as Regional Director Ray Haeren, have been involved in the project since 2012, when initial master planning commenced.

Tim says, “The approval of the Improvement Scheme is a milestone for LandCorp and is an excellent example of how the WA Government’s recent planning reform agenda can deliver exceptional outcomes for a local community.”

We look forward to continuing our work on this project in 2017, including the subdivision of the site and preparation of the public realm guidelines.
