Melbourne’s inner-city and CBD population is expected to rise steadily and nearly double from current rates by 2035, with an increase expected in high-density apartment living required to cater for the demand.
In this presentation for PCA Victoria’s Future Directions networking event, Planning Director Sarah Emons and a panel of experts examined performance against four pillars of best practice development: Mixed Use, Transit, Sustainability, Community, and how they translate in upcoming Melbourne projects.
The outer suburban population boom was also canvassed, particularly regarding the outer western and south-eastern suburbs, and it’s not a great result for one of the world’s most liveable cities. Failure to optimise development around transit corridors and infrastructure to support the demands of the city’s rapid growth, and under-utilisation of obvious urban renewal sites, listed as just some of the factors in lowering the overall scorecard for Melbourne.
