The Hon Grace Grace MP has unveiled the long-awaited Future South Bank Master Plan. Urbis could not be more thrilled to see this critical strategic plan finalised and endorsed by the Government. The plan identifies a range of initiatives and priorities to progressively renew parts of the precinct, ensuring South Bank remains an inclusive, world-class destination and retains its own special status.

Since early 2020, Urbis has worked in partnership with South Bank Corporation as the lead master plan consultant, providing strategic advisory, urban design, landscape architecture, heritage, and economic inputs as part of the Future South Bank consortia.

In early 2023, South Bank Corporation released the Draft Master Plan and invited the public to have their say on the plan’s vision, ideas, and strategic priorities. Since that time, the plan has been refined to acknowledge the feedback received from the community and stakeholders.

The final master plan provides a roadmap for future renewal and improvements. It reinforces the critical role that South Bank plays as Brisbane's great heart and most accessible precinct.

Feedback on the draft plan was clear around the desire to grow and promote the active transport network and deprioritising cars, stressing the importance of South Bank as an even more accessible and connected precinct. Some of the other themes that the final plan strengthens are increasing green space and shade, supporting the renewal of the Southern Gateway and ensuring a coordinated approach to broader renewal in the area around South Bank especially in advance of Brisbane 2032.

Urbis Group Director of Design and overall master plan lead, Natalie Hoitz was thrilled to attend the launch of plan. “Today is huge milestone for all who have been involved in this master planning journey and process. The final master plan provides a roadmap for future renewal and improvements. It reinforces the critical role that South Bank plays as Brisbane’s great heart and most accessible precinct.”

“South Bank is already globally recognised and beloved by locals and visitors. As we welcome the world to Brisbane in 2032, I hope to see key parts of this plan realised over time so that future generations can continue to enjoy this incredible and iconic precinct.”

Thanks to our project partners who were part of the master plan consortia:

Cistri, Cox Architecture, Gillespies (London), Cultural Capital, Arup, and The Social Life Project.
