For almost 140 years, rail transport has been intertwined with Victoria’s economic progress and performance. Since 2007, several proposals have been put forward to expand the Melbourne rail network – proposals for additional rail lines, extensions to existing lines, as well as new stations on existing lines.
In 2012, the state’s Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD) engaged Urbis to conduct opportunity reports for five rail corridor projects: for the Upfield, Craigieburn, Sunbury, Melton and Werribee lines. Urbis provided advice with regard to potential opportunities for enhanced urban development associated with various rail line and station improvement scenarios.
A joint Department of Transport and DPCD initiative will use the findings to enhance transport services along these corridors.
With Urbis’ assistance, this project is set to provide guidance for improved service accessibility and delivery, while providing a number of potential economic opportunities.
