Urbis was engaged by Event Hospitality and Entertainment to work with the project interior designers to refresh the ground floor café located in the entrance to the QT Hotel, Sydney.

The QT Hotel is located in the State Theatre Building which is listed on the State Heritage Register. The Parlour Cucina space, with its lavish Gothic Revival metalwork and plaster finishes and complex terrazzo floors, was created in 1929 by Sydney’s most skilled interwar craftsmen and originally operated as a vertical shopping arcade foyer and display area. The space was comprehensively conserved and adapted to café use in 2012.

Seven years later and the cafe required major refurbishment and a strategic update of fittings and equipment. Urbis provided expert heritage advice to protect the place’s identified heritage significance and guide the major upgrade.

Parlour Cucina offers a unique insight into lavish interwar commercial spaces and their ability to be adapted for dynamic contemporary use.
