Why are so few women in the senior ranks of economists in Australia? Appearing on ABC’s Saturday Extra radio program, Urbis Chief Economist Nicki Hutley shared her thoughts on the matter.
Nicki joins host Geraldine Doogue for an insightful discussion on why there aren’t more women working in economics, and why the once glittering discipline has become less appealing to students, both male and female.
Asked to describe the public face of economics in Australia, Nicki suggested it looked very much like middle aged men, adding that only 9% of economic commentary in the media came from women. Nicki also expressed the importance of economics, that it is at the core of everyday life, stating “Economics is just so vital to every decision we make.”
