I was fortunate to have been given the honour of presenting my findings on the creation and implementation of the Western Australian Multi Unit Housing Code (MUHC) at the Urban Development Institute of Australia’s (UDIA) Density Forum, held at Crown Perth on 15 May 2015.

Commissioned in 2008 by the former Department of Planning and Infrastructure, Urbis helped to create a code to provide additional guidance in the development and assessment of multiple dwelling developments within WA through the existing residential design codes.

The objectives of the MUHC were to:

  • expand housing choices
  • facilitate development of existing housing sites
  • reduce disincentive for smaller dwellings
  • improve design of multi unit housing, and
  • improve local government ability to apply and promote multi unit housing and mixed use developments.
