Koombana North won both the Award for Excellence for Civic Landscapes and the WA Medal at the WA AILA (Australian Institute Landscape Architecture) awards on Friday 21 July.

LandCorp engaged Urbis to provide master planning, landscape design and contract administration for the transformation of this former industrial waterfront into a sought after coastal destination.

The development features an improved public waterfront area, better family beaches and a revitalised setting for future retail, commercial and residential development.

Koombana North represents a significant example of a finely-tuned and well-honed celebration of foreshore and community

Carl Thompson,  said: “We were delighted to accept these awards on an evening celebrating landscape architecture’s vast contribution to the places in which we live and hold dear.

“Thank you to LandCorp for being such great supporters of Urbis over many years and for giving us the opportunity to contribute to the profession, cities and communities that we are privileged to be a part of.

“Congratulations to the whole team whose passion, skill and commitment brought this project to life, and to our project partners who were instrumental in making it happen.”

The judges praised Koombana North’s excellence from a modest scope and budget, saying, ‘The design balances a pragmatic response to harsh coastal conditions with elements of whimsy suggesting pleasure, leisure and sincerity… Koombana North represents a significant example of a finely-tuned and well-honed celebration of foreshore and community.’

The judges also acknowledged ‘The mindful selection of materials, careful design and placement of amenities, and acknowledgement of the foreshore context [which] have made this a space that will grow, thrive, and generate memories for years to come’.
