New Norcia Heritage and Conservation

New Norcia, WA — 2024 - ongoing

Australia's only monastic town

Founded in 1847 by Spanish Benedictine Monks and developed in stages through to the 1930s, New Norcia is Australia’s only monastic town. Located northeast of Perth, forty three buildings and structures contribute to the site’s heritage significance, alongside its robust site planning, landscape and rich intangible historic value.

The site showcases a unique blend of Spanish Mission, Byzantine and Gothic Revival architecture that contrasts sharply with the surrounding Australian bushland, ensuring its reputation as a unique tourist destination for local and international visitors.

Looking forward for New Norcia

As New Norcia’s community seeks to manage future change, the comprehensive Conservation Management Plan (CMP) we prepared provides a clear framework to identify, protect and manage the town’s multifaceted cultural heritage values. This strategic, future-focused document supports the Benedictine Community in safeguarding New Norcia’s multi-faceted heritage value while guiding its evolution into the future.

Following preparation of the CMP, we have continued to assist the Benedictine Community with the long‑term management of its asset portfolio, delivering heritage architectural services as required, including oversight of urgent repair works.

New Norcia’s Conservation Management Plan brings clarity for managing the town’s layered history and complex heritage while providing a practical framework for its future.
