Setting the vision

As part of Phase One of Perth Zoo’s Master Plan 2040, Urbis was engaged as heritage architects and interpretation designers to ensure the Zoo’s heritage actively this major public investment. The project presented a high profile opportunity to use heritage as a driver of place identity, setting expectations for visitor experience, conservation and education from the moment of arrival. In doing so, the project engages Perth Zoo’s approximately 800,000 annual visitors with the Zoo’s history through an integrated and contemporary landscape experience.

Embedding heritage in design

We developed a comprehensive heritage interpretation plan grounded in a detailed assessment of the significance of early structures affected by the project, including opportunities for adaptive reuse and sensitive change. Working as an integrated team with the Zoo and their consultants, we embedded heritage thinking into the design process from concept through to delivery. We insured that interpretation was translated into built outcomes through the reuse of historic elements, interpretive signage and carefully crafted narratives, meaning heritage was experienced as part of the landscape rather than added as an overlay.

Bringing history to life

The interpretation plan was implemented, resulting in a cohesive and engaging visitor experience that brings Perth Zoo’s history to life while supporting contemporary use. Heritage values were conserved, clearly communicated and made accessible to a broad audience, giving the client confidence that heritage obligations were met without constraining design quality or program delivery. The project’s success was recognised with a Commendation at the 2025 Heritage Council Awards, demonstrating the value of early, integrated heritage interpretation in delivering lasting cultural and community education benefits.
