North South Corridor

Singapore — 2024

Client:

Land Transport Authority of Singapore

Connecting north and south Singapore

Urbis’ international brand, Cistri, as part of a consortium led by Henning Larsen, successfully bid for and won an international Request for Proposal to put forward a vision for the North-South Corridor (NSC) Surface Streets to the Land Transport Authority of Singapore.

Cistri and it’s subconsultants (Urban+ and LOPELAB) are leading the Placemaking and Urban Design inputs for NSC’s master plan.

“The North-South Corridor is a city shaping project that will positively transform the urban landscape of Singapore for generations to come.”
Rahul Mittal, Director

Reimagining people-first streets

The 21.5 km long NSC will see the surface streets become inviting pathways to encourage active mobility and include versatile public spaces for the community to gather, socialise, and rest. This project will be transformational for both residents and visitors alike – enhancing connectivity from the north to the south of Singapore and creating a thriving multi-use corridor.

With more traffic being channelled to NSC’s 8.8km viaduct and 12.3km tunnel, surface streets along the corridor, which pass through diverse residential neighbourhoods, recreational spaces, industrial areas, and historic districts, will be repurposed to give more priority to walking, cycling, public transport and community spaces.

The Master Plan is expected to be completed in 2026 and the repurposing of NSC’s surface streets will be implemented in stages from 2027 onwards.

Cultural community spaces

NSC will introduce four key sections:

  • a 6km Community-Industrial segment in Woodlands and Sembawang towns,
  • a 7km Ecological Loop connecting to the Central Catchment,
  • a 5km People’s Wellness Corridor along Upper Thomson, Bishan, Tao Payoh, and along the upcoming HealthCity Novena,
  • and a 3.5km Cultural-Heritage Segment, along Singapore’s Historical and Cultural Districts such as Little India and Kampong Glam, with several placemaking nodes to explore.

Designed for inclusivity, NSC will reflect local culture and heritage by creating adaptable, public spaces that meet the present and future needs of local communities.
