Kali “champions the role of architectural expertise in shaping policy, planning, and strategy” and “offers a powerful example of an alternate architectural path – where strategic vision and human empathy are mobilised to create lasting impact,” according to the awards jury.

Kali received the distinguished prize at the AIA’s National Awards in Canberra last night.

“As a strategic advisor, educator, and researcher, Dr Kali Marnane exemplifies an architectural career that is both broad in scope and deeply impactful. Her work shows how architectural leadership can transcend individual projects to shape collective outcomes,” the jury stated.

The national award highlights two key aspects of the profession: social responsibility, and the impact we can have working beyond the traditional field of architecture.

"I work across a diverse range of projects — from community visioning, strategic planning, to design policy — advocating for the role of design and the importance of listening to communities early in the process. These days, architects are key clients and collaborators. I work with them to shape strategies that connect great design with the needs and experiences of people. I bridge the worlds of architecture, research, and community, speaking the language of design, connecting people, and showing how spaces shape lives," Kali said.

Kali works in community strategy, translating needs and community visions into physical designs; pre-design services, including engagement, design guidelines, research, community visioning, housing strategies, design policy, culture-led master-planning, and architectural advocacy; and post-design services, including place-based evaluations and post-occupancy evaluations (POEs); and has robust expertise in social and affordable housing, education, and precincts.

Kali’s recognition as the 2025 National Emerging Architect reflects her ability to connect people, policy, and place. Her work on projects like the Tweed Shire Council Affordable Housing Strategy shows how she translates community vision into practical strategies that advance housing equity.
