Urbis was proud to support Open House Melbourne’s 10th Anniversary program. A bumper month of programming throughout July culminated in the Open House Weekend, with more than 200 buildings and sites across Melbourne opened to explore.

Open House empowers citizens to be active participants in the building of their city. It seeks to educate people about how design decisions, the built environment and urban planning initiatives and issues influence our culture and shape our future.

In many ways, the ambitions of Open House mirror those of Urbis – ensuring our cities remain vibrant, liveable places, now and in the future.

We were pleased to lend our expertise to the programme. Planning Director Jane Kelly was on the panel of ‘Design City: Built Melbourne!’, where experts explore the process behind Melbourne’s built fabric – from planning and design, through to the developed outcome.

Jane guided the audience through the planning process behind the new Melbourne Conservatorium of Music in Australia’s premier arts, cultural and educational precinct.

Thoughtful planning and design will be critical to cherishing and protecting our existing buildings, while allowing for new ones.

We were also grateful to share in the learning – from attending the program launch, enjoying screenings of Modern Melbourne and receiving a fascinating look at the working lives of two of Melbourne’s most influential designers – to volunteering and exploring on Open House Weekend.

It was a privilege to hear from Executive Director Emma Telfer and founding president Tim Leslie at the Open House Social. The launch celebration, held at the newly reopened Temperance Hall, featured a performance of EVER by current custodians of the Hall, Phillip Adams BalletLab.

Tim’s message of preserving the energy and spirit of a place’s heritage, and encouraging the public to engage with and understand the value of the built environment, resonated deeply.

As Melbourne’s population doubles over the next 30 years, the contribution of thoughtful planning and design will be critical to cherishing and protecting our existing buildings, while allowing for new ones.

Thank you, Open House Melbourne, for also helping to shape Australia’s cities and communities for a better future.
