Economists are closely pouring over the details of the Government’s second Budget. The World Today spoke to economist Nicki Hutley, who is the director of consulting firm Urbis, and David Hetherington, the executive director of think tank Per Capita.

Nicki believes that the Government’s economic forecasts are optimistic, but these figures will only be achieved with more growth in household wages and spending, as well as greater business confidence.

...the Government needs this growth to come through for them to achieve their outcomes on the fiscal setting.

“I do think they’re optimistic, but the Government needs this growth to come through for them to achieve their outcomes on the fiscal setting. So if we don’t get big growth, we don’t get the Budget back to surplus by 2019/20.”
